AdvancedNorth China Restuarant - gets my vote
Mind you - the fact that work were paying helps!
The biggest recommendation is that I work for a Chinese run company! This restaurant, which is right next to the bus depot , looks really large on the outside, but is infact quite cozy - they have nice round tables with lazy susans, which are fab if a group of you go. No idea of the cost - but suggest you ask tone!
Fabulous food
I thought I posted! Must have hit preview instead of post.
I love the North China. Back when Oak Tree met in the school the first time round, people quite often went there for lunch afterwards, and there was a 10% discount for Oak Tree members!
The set menus are great. Our fave is Menu C (I think) which costs about £13.50. You get soup or spare ribs, then crispy duck, then 2 main dishes plus vegetables and rice, and finally toffee apple and banana pieces. (In our case, only apple, as Flag Man is allergic to banana!)
It’s superb value, and excellent quality food. And Laurence, the manager, is a lovely guy.
I thought I’d put in the menu that we had (specially asked for in advance, so you might have to ask in advance for some of the things!) Note the lack of rice (although they ordered some after the Italian guy wailed cos he thought he might get hungry!) They also order a couple of other dishes - not that we didn’t already have enough to eat!
Cold Starter - Jelly of port, Vegetarian Goose (yes ….. I did ask the question!!) Teriyaki beef and chinese salad. Okay!
Peking duck served with pancake - best duck with pancake I’ve ever had - worth a try
Lettuce Wrap with Peking Duck - Fantastic and you can feel virtuous as well!
Fish Slices in Wine sauce - nice, but could be missed
Imitation Crab (can’t remember this one)
Chicken and Cashewnuts in yellow bean sauce - okay
Deep fried shredded beef in CHilli sauce - fantastic
Quick fried lamb slices with spring onion - okay
Stir fried peashoots with garlic - didn’t rate this too high
Braised bean curd with vegetables - gave this a miss I think
Stir fried home made noodles - Fab
Boiled home made dumplings - okay
Peking duck soup - okay - by this time I could barely move!
Pudding - Red Bean Puff …. interesting, I think these should be tried! Ask for them next time you go!
They added in a couple of other dishes - one a rather slimmy noodle dish (which I said I was too full to appreciate fully .. which was partly true) and one King Prawns - which were fab!
Apparently the Chinese don’t have rice in their “banquets” as it’s too much of an everyday food!
Maybe you guys who always have the same set menu, should throw something else in as well!
Looking forward to my next trip, but my gp has told me to watch my salt intake and I think I probably had all my months quota in one meal, so best leave it till after Christmas!
