FREE TEA, COFFEE and PRAYER!

Acton Market Place

10am – 2pm every Saturday

.

Over three years ago a Oaktree decided to start a market stall that would give out free tea and coffee and be a place where anyone could get a quick hot drink and a chat with a Christian if they wanted too!

Little did we know it would last this long.

We have met some amazing people who are part of the diversity of Acton, and we love hanging out with them each Saturday. From old to young, from wealthy to poor. Some have addiction issues, some have mental health problems, some dash away, some stay for hours… we try to serve them all equally and with as much grace as we can.

The great thing is that we have found smiles, laughter, patience and the giving of a free gift is pretty contagious! Other stalls have generously fed us, laughed with us and enjoyed the odd tea and coffee.

We have also found that in and amongst the smiles there is hurt and we can offer prayer to a great and faithful God for those things. We’ve seen pain disappear, tears and God speak to people to encourage them.

You can volunteer by getting in touch and coming to a training session.

“It’s such an easy way of meeting local people… offering a cup of tea is a great way to break through that famous London ‘no eye contact, no conversation’ thing we have going on.”

.

“There have been mornings I’ve been reluctant to do the market but every time I get down there it changes. It’s great getting to know other market stall holders and whoever comes to the stall… The bonus is all the people you meet.”

.

“I would never be able to walk over to random strangers on the street and start chatting but on the market they come to me! I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone.”

Market Church – 11th December 2010 (+Christmas next week!)

Market CHURCH Hello Marketeers Incarnation or old decoration? God came and moved in next door to you, he wants to be your neighbour (and much more of course) this is what it means that Jesus was born. But sometimes the church is more like that decoration that was once beautiful but is now in the corner of the loft somewhere. The church is called to be the body of Jesus, to be the best neighbour... [Read more of this entry]

Market this week… 13th November 2010

Earlier in the year Nokia hung the world’s biggest signpost from a crane at Tower Bridge. The sign itself was taller than 2 double decker buses, weighed 60 tons and hung 50m in the air! Big. At the market stall we often have to learn to be a signpost… This is where the closest free meal is (St. John’s Ealing on a Saturday lunchtime). This is where Emmaus House... [Read more of this entry]

Fireworks When God speaks it’s like fireworks go off. Darkness gets made beautiful with light. Just look at creation…. God says: ‘Let there be light’ and there was the beginning of the universe! When we pray for someone or listen to God for someone we give God opportunity to speak to that person. And when God speaks, stuff happens! Last week at the the... [Read more of this entry]

Market CHURCH Hello Marketeers 1 in 4 One in four people in the U.K. will experience some kind of mental health issue this year. The reality is that we all sit somewhere on the spectrum of mental health. For some it may be a passing experience, for some a seasonal weight, for others it may be a severe illness. On the Market we have met many people who could be placed along the length of a mental... [Read more of this entry]

Market this week… 18th Sept 2010

At the market stall I find it very hard to measure what we’re doing. I’ve measured in cups, approximately 150-200 per week. Coffee = 250g per week Tea = 75-100 per bags per week Sugar = 250g per week (possibly an average of 3 spoons per cup!!?) And we know that there is so much more than we realise happening just through simple and patient conversations. And a depth of message by giving... [Read more of this entry]

Market CHURCH Hello Marketeers Do you ever feel like you want to hide away? This picture is of the residence of a man in Plymouth who has grown these 10 metre tall trees around three sides of his house. (click to read full article). A year or so before he had built a 3m high wall around his property. It’s a funny picture but obviously there’s something serious going on in his head and... [Read more of this entry]
