There’s a lady who’s been going around Acton asking for £1 to go on the bus to visit her mum who’s been taken to Ealing Hospital.

I’ve seen her telling the same story for many months now. The police are aware of her. They suggest that if she asks you for money, tell her to go to the police station where they can help her.

I never know what to do in cases like this - but I think it’s a case of ‘being wise as serpents and innocent as doves’.

(Incidentally, on Saturday morning I was approached by two cheery men with cans of lager in their hands, who asked me if I could give them some money for a flight to Barbados! I laughed and told them at least they’d been original!)

Not sure it’s the same one - but a similar thread is running on actonw3.com

this has photos of the begging lady so she’s a bit of a regular. I think the idea of pointing her to the police station is a good one tho.

Wed, 01/11/2006 - 17:01 :: I sometimes offer to buy food or a coffee!

An other idea is to offer to wait for a bus and pay the fare then - if they are genuine, they will agree to wait - if not, they won’t.

I have been known to give food to people - I always ask first - the non genuine ones usually refuse! But I do tend to ask how many sugars and such like and I don’t do it often.
