Keith Davies was born in 1949, in Llanelli, South Wales. In his family there was a Christian influence that dated back a number of years, but by the age of 14 he had stopped attending church, finding many other things much more interesting. As he grew up, he carved out quite a career for himself, becoming a sought after lighting technician for international tours of various rock bands. Now, a qualified electrician, living and working locally, he loves to spend his spare time working with kids by managing a local football team.
Keith it sounds great to be travelling the world with the rich and famous! Tell us about the early part of your life.
Those were good years for me, I really enjoyed them. Getting to travel all over the world was brilliant. I did the lighting for loads of big name bands in big venues. It was hard work though. When you’re on tour, it isn’t all parties for those of us behind the scenes. It almost a twenty-four hours a day job really. One thing about the business is that it is full of tragedies. Some earn big money on a tour but come back broke because they’ve spent it all on drugs. For many, when they leave the music business, they’ve nowhere to go.
In 1996, why did you decide to get out of that scene and come back to Ealing?
I’d done everything I wanted to do really. I think I had gone as far as I had wanted. After a while, you get sick of living out of a suitcase and you reach the point where you want to put down some roots. So I went back to college and updated my exams so that I could work locally as an electrician.
So how did you end up attending the Alpha course?
Well for a few years I have helped out at the Acton Extravaganza which is a annual summer fete held in Acton Park. It was pouring with rain and I was helping to clear up the site. I noticed the Alpha stall there and the people on it were friendly so I picked up some details. It all started from there really.
So you decided to give it a try, what did you make of it?
I didn’t know what to expect, but the people were very friendly, the food was good, and the talks and discussions were lively too. I continued to go, and decided to give the weekend away a try as well despite being a bit sceptical. The speaker was a Welshman so I took to him straight away. The talks were about the Holy Spirit and I took the opportunity to be prayed for. I felt a great sense of release. That night I couldn’t sleep, instead I spent most of the night reading the bible. The next morning, as we were worshipping, I actually saw a vision of Jesus on the cross. The grief was over-bearing and I began to cry. I was overwhelmed really because I realised for the first time that Jesus had given his life for me. I had turned my back on Jesus and I felt guilty for that. But he was welcoming me.
What happened then?
As I was prayed for my whole body filled up with the Holy Spirit and something just changed inside me. I had suffered with a painful back for years and that got healed too! I walked around for the next few days whispering ‘Jesus I love you’, but in my head I was shouting it!
How has life changed for you since then?
Well previously there was a part of my life that was empty and void but that isn’t thecase now. I’m not so lonely anymore either. I’ve always had friends around me, but no-one to talk to. Now I can talk to God whenever and wherever. I don’t talk to him out of ritual, but because it’s a relationship. I’ve seen some things that have made me realise that there is so much more that I can do with my life. I know that God has got something special out there for me, and that he’ll tell me just what it is. All of this from a chance meeting at the local town fair. I would never have gone along to church, but thankfully the church came to the park. Because of that, I have now discovered the love of Jesus and I a new purpose for my life.
